SHADOW BOXES for $5

Create shadow boxes from second hard find.

Scourging the second hand stores for anything that can be repurposed, I happened upon a pair of brown shadow boxes for $2.50 a piece.

Design with Spray Paint in Mind

“If you like the bones (the shape, the size, the texture) of an item, imagine it in your favourite trendy colour. If you like what it could be if revamped then give it a try.”

0.0 The Original

The original shadow boxes were dark brown. Not to my liking so time to rummage in the basement for what spray paint I had on hand.

1.0 Spray Paint

Spray the paint colour of your choice in a well-ventilated area with a drop-sheet or cardboard

under the shadow boxes (I used Rust - Oleum 2x Ultra Cover in FLAT Grey). Expect to use 1/4 of the can. Leftover spray paint are great for other projects.

Wear a plastic glove on your hand that is spraying as there can be leakage near the nozzle and this prevents the spray paint from getting on your thumb.

If you get spray paint on your skin, use household oil to remove as water and soap usually will not suffice.

2.0 Stage

Find a place to hang and decorate inside the box with fake plants, picture frames, or other small items. I chose two plants from Dollarama for $3.50 a piece.
