Time to update your ho-hum living room? This 1970s living room was begging for an update. We purchased new furniture, repurposed old items, and gave it a fresh new look for under $2,000.
“Loved the size of the room. Time to tackle cedar shakes on the walls, a brown stone hearth, orange carpet and outdated decor...”
0.0 The Original
Removed the orange carpet, light fixtures, blinds, cedar shakes, and decals on wall.
1.0 Colour
Decided on a grey palette for the walls, furniture, and decor.
2.0 Furniture
Found affordable sectional with ottoman at Badboy for $950.
Comfortable budget-friendly chairs at Walmart.ca for $200.00. Foot stools for $59 each.
All delivered to your doorstep.
3.0 Art
HomeSense has been the winner for me in finding art for the walls at prices I don't cringe at. All art under $50.00 a piece.
4.0 Plants
Adding shade plants or fake plants in areas of the room that receive little to no light is a wonderful way to make the place feel bright and airy. Walmart's Outdoor Living department sells ivy for $2.98. Zehrs floral department sells plants for $2.99 - 12.99. Dollarama sells fake plants for a few dollars (pictures below).
5.0 Planters
Check second hand stores for planters that can be spray painted to match your decor style.
Walmart, Dollarama, HomeSense, & Winners all sell affordable planters for your greenery.
6.0 Fabrics
Curtains and curtain rods from Walmart. Pillows from HomeSense. Check second hand stores for throw blankets that can be draped over couch or chair arms for easy access to grab. If not the colour of your choice, you can always dye the fabric if dying darker than the original.
7.0 Old Books
The best place I've found for old books under $5.00 a piece is Value Village. They have separated the older books from the newer hardbacks. When purchasing older books, keep in mind your colour palette and choose books within that colour scheme. If looking at newer books, peek inside the dust jacket to see what the jacket colour actually is.
8.0 Stage
The fun part of your collecting is arranging your items for visual effect. Remember groupings.
